I hate editing non-free images on Wikipedia. You spend time making an image look nice, then three months later you get a message on your talk page from some bot stating that it's no longer being used in an article (or some other such nonsense) and it's going to be promptly deleted. Utterly wasted time and effort... one of the supreme joys of Wikipedia. So to minimize such annoyances, I tend to stick with totally free Commons images. While the occasional instance of a commons file (along with my time & effort) ends up in the delete bin, the instances are much fewer and farther between.
