On the morning of February 22, 2024, three Palestinian gunmen opened fire at the az-Za'ayyem checkpoint in the Olive Interchange on Highway 1, killing an Israeli citizen and injuring eleven others. Two of the gunmen were killed during the attack, and the third was killed in a chase afterward.[1]

On the morning of February 22, 2024, three gunmen arrived by car from at the az-Za'ayyem checkpoint; two were brothers from the Ta'amreh tribe in the Bethlehem district, and the third man was from Za'atara, also in the Bethlehem area. They emerged from the vehicle with firearms, and fired automatic weapons at cars stuck in a traffic jam near the checkpoint. They killed Matan Elmaliach (26) and injured eleven people, two of them seriously.[2][3][4]

According to the Israeli Police, two of the gunmen were killed by civilians and security personnel at the scene, and the other was killed by security forces at the scene after he attempted to flee.[3]
