The Outlet challenge, also known as Penny challenge, is an Internet challenge emerged in January 2020 on the controversial social media platform Tik Tok.[1]
It exploits the design of North American MAINS power outlets by inserting conductive material such as a coin or paper clip into the gap of a partially inserted wall plug with exposed prongs, usually a mobile phone charger, possibly causing electric sparks.[2][3][4]
European and BS 1363 plugs are not vulnerable due to their design not allowing exposed live prongs.
Incidents
In the Westford Academy, the challenge has lead to a building evacuation after smoke was noticed leaving power outlets.[1]
