Sir Richard William Allen (1867-1955) was an British engineer and the eldest son of Mr. William Henry Allen, founder of the firm of W. H. Allen, Sons & Co, Ltd.
Early Life
Born at 5 Park Place, Cardiff on 31st January 1867. He was educated at Christ College, Finchley under Dr. Gallop, while his technical education was from Dr. Gisbert Kapp, the Austrian-English electrical engineer.
Career
Richard started his career as an apprentice with the firm that his father had founded, known then as W. H. Allen and Company, at their York Street Works in Lambeth, London. During his apprenticeship he gained knowledge in the design and production of centrifugal pumps, high speed steam engines, gas exhauster, electrical generators and electrical motors.
He gained further engineering training and experience with John Elder and Company, Glasgow, which later became the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company. He also worked
