Summary
Illustration of colour distribution of the trans-Neptunian objects. Plotted by a program written by Eurocommuter.
Yellow labels: For reference, Neptune's moon Triton, Saturn's moon Phoebe, centaur Pholus, and the planet Mars are added to the plot in yellow. (Mars and Triton are not plotted on the size scale, but are included to indicate their color.)
Mars, Phoebe, and Pholus are not trans-Neptunian objects.
Quaoar and Varuna with similar sizes and color indices are covering each other.
Graph
- The position of an object represents the two colour indices
- horizontal axis V-B, blue colour index i.e. the difference in the magnitude of the object observed through a visual (green-yellow) and a blue filter
- vertical axis V-R, red colour index, the difference in the magnitude between red and visual filters
- colour (slightly enhanced) represents the hue of the object;
- the size of a sphere illustrates the object’s size relative to others.
- for a few large trans-Neptunian objects, the diameter drawn represents the 2006 estimates (for measured best-fit albedos)
- for all the others, the diameter represents the absolute (H) magnitude of the object.
