A Different Man is a 2024 American black comedy psychological thriller film[5][6][7] written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, starring Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson.

The film premiered at Sundance on January 21, 2024, and it was released in the United States on September 20, 2024.

Plot

Edward is an actor living in New York with neurofibromatosis. Socially awkward and nervous, Edward struggles to make friends and secure auditions, living a lonely existence in his apartment building. An aspiring playwright called Ingrid moves in next door to Edward and the pair strike up a friendship, although Edward is too nervous to act on his romantic feelings towards her. Ingrid decides to write a play inspired by Edward's experience with his disability. Edward is told about an experimental procedure that could cure his facial disfigurement and decides to take part. Initially, Edward struggles with the strict medication schedule and the side effects which include his skin peeling off. After sometime, Edward's neurofibromatosis is gone and he has the face of a conventionally attractive man. A repairman arrives at his apartment to repair a hole in the roof. Edward introduces himself as Guy Moratz and claims Edward has killed himself which Ingrid overhears.

Sometime later, Edward has moved out of the apartment building and now works as a successful real estate agent. One day, he follows Ingrid to a theatre where she is holding auditions for her play about Edward which is also named after him. Edward auditions and bombs although he returns the next day wearing a mask of his face before treatment and is cast in the play. Ingrid, who is unaware that Guy is Edward begins a sexual relationship with him as they rehearse the play. However, Edward struggles with remembering his lines and struggles to talk clearly through the mask. One day during rehearsals, they are visited by Oswald, a man who also has neurofibromatosis who is interested in the play. He quickly befriends the cast and crew including Ingrid although Edward is taken aback by how confident and charismatic Oswald is despite his disfigurment.

Oswald and Edward begin to cross paths regularly with Edward growing increasingly jealous of Oswald and his popularity although Oswald is friendly and supportive towards Edward, encouraging him to perform in the play. Ingrid also gets closer to Oswald, upsetting Edward. Ingrid decides to replace Edward with Oswald in the play although at Oswald's insistence, Edward still has a small part at the end of the play. Unlike Edward, Oswald is able to memorize his lines. The play is a success and Oswald's performance gets rave reviews. After a few performances, Edward is dropped from the play and Ingrid grows more distant. Convinced that Oswald is stealing his success, Edward stalks him across the city and learns he has an ex wife and child and is now moving into his old apartment. Edward's behavior continues to deteriorate; he gets fired from his job and eventually storms the stage of the play one night, attacking Oswald. During the scuffle, part of the set falls on Edward breaking his legs and arms.

Recovering from his injuries, Edward accompanies Oswald and Ingrid to a meeting with actor Michael Shannon who plans to turn Ingrid's play into a movie. Edward continues to resent Oswald. Ingrid and Oswald move in together, start a relationship and Ingrid becomes pregnant with Oswald's child. Edward stays with them while he recovers. One day, Edward has a mental breakdown, stabs his physical therapist, and is jailed. Years later, Edward is released and once again encounters Oswald. He has dinner with Oswald and Ingrid, now married and highly successful. The couple tells Edward they are moving to join a commune in Canada. The waiter arrives to take their orders but a visibly nervous Edward struggles to choose from the menu. As Edward looks through the menu, Oswald jokes that Edward hasn't changed a bit.
