HYBYCOZO is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary art collective founded by Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu in 2014. Their work focuses on geometric sculptural forms and two dimensional tessellation, pattern making, and design. HYBYCOZO (pronounced hi-bi-coh-zoh) is a portmanteau derived from "Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone" which is allusion to the Douglas Adams science fiction book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and captures the artists' shared interests in the many dimensions of geometry, from natural patterns found at the microscopic level in particle physics to patterns in the cosmic scale while utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques such as laser cutting and 3D printing to produce artwork.[1]

Career

In 2014, the duo brought their first collaborative installation, Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone (HYBYCOZO), to Burning Man. The installation consisted of three steel polyhedral sculptures that cast patterns of light and shadow on the surrounding environment. Soon after, they took the name HYBYCOZO for their continued collaboration, focusing on installations that draw inspiration from mathematics, science, nature, and culture.[3]

In 2015, the Billboard Music Awards were accused of plagiarizing HYBYCOZO's artwork for the "Hey Mama" stage design by David Guetta and Nicki Minaj.[4]

HYBYCOZO was invited to the 2015 Sharjah Islamic Arts Festiva l where they exhibited their 4 polyhedron sculptures and their largest work to date, Deep Thought.[5]

In 2016, they created Trillian, a long term public installation at Patricia's Green in Hayes Valley San Francisco.[6]

In 2017, the duo was invited to present their artworks in Singapore at iLight Marina Bay.[7] Later that year, HYBYCOZO began their collaboration with Lightswitch to present their works in botanic gardens, arboretums, and other park like settings to explore the beauty of nature and light art.[8]

In 2018, HYBYCOZO was a part of the Burning Man No Spectators show at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum showcasing their artworks, Deep Thought (2015), Trocto (2014), and Lviv (2018).[9] They also participated in the outdoor portion of the show No Spectators: Beyond the Renwick showcasing their work, The Golden Spike (2016). Later that year, HYBYCOZO created 5 permanent artworks for Art Emaar at the Dubai Mall.

In 2019, HYBYCOZO completed a large scale public-private 1% for the arts project with the City of Oakland and the Hanover Company. Connecting two plazas across the street from each other, one contains the artwork "In Their Roots, All Trees Keep the Light," a 20ft representation of the Oakland oak tree and in the other plaza, a field of 8 California Poppies entitled "The Earth Laughs in Flowers."

In 2021-2022 their artworks, Mosaic of Light and Lightfield, toured the United States with shows at Arizona State University, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Houston, Texas, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[10][11][12][13][14]

In 2021, HYBYCOZO completed a sculpture, Stratum, for the new U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey for the Art in Embassies program for the Department of State.[15] In the same year, they created the artwork, Encompass, for the State of California CHHS building in Sacramento.[16]

In 2022 HYBYCOZO had their first exhibit in London at CityPoint and Principle Place. In collaboration with Brookfield Properties, HYBYCOZO presented Pyrite Field and Polyhedra.[17]

In 2023 at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, HYBYCOZO unveiled a large scale outdoor work entitled Congruence, a stack of truncated octahedrons based on the crystal structure of fluorite.[18]
