Marge Carson is a furniture manufacturer known for producing customizable, handcrafted home furnishings. Established in 1947, the company has become a recognized name in upscale home furnishings, offering luxury furniture for high-end clientele.[1] Marge Carson specializes in creating bespoke pieces, combining design flexibility and craftsmanship.[2][3][4]
History
Marge Carson was founded in 1947 by Marjorie Reese Carson, a designer focused on high-end, customizable furniture that combined European design elements with American craftsmanship. Based in California, the company gained recognition in the post-World War II era, as American homeowners sought more personalized and luxurious furnishings. The company began as a family-run business and built its reputation on attention to detail and the use of premium materials.[5]
From its inception, Marge Carson offered bespoke furniture with intricate detailing and high-quality craftsmanship. The company’s design philosophy blended European influences with California's relaxed lifestyle, appealing to a clientele of homeowners and interior designers seeking upscale, custom design solutions.
Acquisition by Masco Corporation (1980s–1995) In the late 1980s, Masco Corporation, a home improvement and building products company, acquired Marge Carson.[6] The acquisition provided Marge Carson with financial support, allowing the company to expand its operations and enter new markets. While Masco's business approach differed from Marge Carson's luxury focus, the company continued to maintain its reputation for high-quality, customizable furniture.
Jim LaBarge Ownership (1995–2022) In 1995, Jim LaBarge, CEO of Marge Carson, led a management buyout from Masco Corporation. Under LaBarge's ownership, the company focused on craftsmanship and custom design, producing handcrafted furniture in the USA, Mexico and Indonesia. LaBarge's leadership saw Marge Carson expand its presence in showrooms across the United States and internationally.[1][7][8]
In 2022, LaBarge ceased operations of Marge Carson, ending more than two decades of ownership.[9] The company’s sudden closure left its future uncertain until its acquisition later that year.
Janet Linly Ownership (2022–Present) In 2022, Janet Linly, founder and CEO of Chicago-based interior design firm Linly Designs, acquired the Marge Carson brand after its closure.[10][11] Linly’s acquisition also included the company’s manufacturing facility, allowing her to preserve the brand's tradition of artisan craftsmanship.[12] Under Linly's leadership, Marge Carson has been repositioned as an increasingly exclusive luxury brand, with distribution to only select showrooms and designers globally.[13] Her leadership has strengthened Marge Carson's position in the luxury furniture market, preserving its legacy while adapting the brand to meet modern expectations and preferences.[14]
