The Litowitz MFA+MA Graduate Program in Creative Writing and English
The Litowitz MFA+MA Graduate Program in Creative Writing and English at Northwestern University (often shortened to "The Litowitz Program" or "The Lit") is a graduate-level creative writing program. The program was established in 2018, making it one of the newest graduate-level creative writing programs in America. The faculty of The Litowitz MFA+MA includes Natasha Trethewey, Chris Abani, Charif Shanahan, Sarah Schulman, Juan Martinez, and Daisy Hernández.[1]
The Litowitz Program currently offers the highest stipend among all graduate creative writing programs in America[2] ($45,000 for the 2024-25 academic year).
History
The program began as part of Northwestern University's "We Will" Fundraising Initiative, which began in 2014 and sought to raise $3.75 billion by 2018.[3][failed verification][4] Northwestern received a gift of $10 million for a new graduate creative writing program from Jennifer Leischner Litowitz, an alumna of the class of 1991, and her husband, Alec Litowitz.[4] The first cohort of students was admitted for the 2018-2019 academic year and graduated in June of 2021.[4]
The Litowitz Program funds and operates TriQuarterly, the internationally-renowned literary journal of Northwestern University.[5]
