ATP synthase is an enzyme that creates the major energy storage molecule — adenosine triphosphate (ATP), also known as «molecular unit of currency» — that is found in all known forms of life. The formation of ATP is energetically unfavorable and would not normally proceed. In order to drive this reaction forward, ATP synthase couples ATP synthesis to an electrochemical gradient that drives rotational motor mechanism allowing for ATP production. Because of its rotating subunit, ATP synthase is a molecular machine.

[1], PDB files: 5ARA, 5ARH, 5FIK, 5ARI, 5ARE; EMDataResource: EMD-3169. Coordinates interpolation and extra PDB-files production by Piecewise Cubic Hermite Interpolating Polynomial (PCHIP) was done with self-written script in MathWorks Matlab (R2020a). Data visualisation and animation was done with Molecular Maya (Clarafi mMaya for Autodesk Maya 2018). The video file was created with Adobe Media Encoder (v14.2) from a batch of jpeg-frames — by Theora for Premiere Pro (v0.5b5, 7 March 2014).

АТФ-синтаза является ферментом, который создает ключевую молекулу для накопления энергии — аденозинтрифосфат (АТФ), также известный как «молекулярная валюта» — встречающийся во всех известных формах жизни («универсальный источник энергии»). Образование АТФ энергетически невыгодно и не происходит при нормальных условиях. Чтобы провести данную реакцию, АТФ-синтаза объединяет синтез АТФ с электрохимическим градиентом — градиент приводит в движение вращательный механизм, позволяющий формировать молекулы АТФ. Из-за своей вращающейся субъединицы АТФ-синтаза является молекулярной машиной.
