Usage
- This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects from names with title and Category:Unprintworthy redirects by default. In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Most names with titles are not needed in a printed version unless they make plausible search terms. In other words they are usually unprintworthy. See below for the few such redirects that are printworthy.
![]() | Please do not alter the printworthy settings of this rcat without first notifying the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, who are responsible for any and all materials, including redirects, that go into a printed version of Wikipedia. |
- Add this rcat to a redirect page (not a talk-page redirect) in the following manner:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
- REDIRECT (target article title)
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
</syntaxhighlight>
- Template Rcat shell is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
- REDIRECT (target article title)
- From name with title: This is a redirect from a person's name (typically surname) preceded (or followed) by a title, such as "Mayor Smith" or "Cardinal Doe" to the name with no title or with the title in parentheses.
</syntaxhighlight>
- This is in accord with instructions found at WP:REDCAT.
- Typical use is where Title Surname is a redirect to Firstname Surname or Firstname Surname (qualifier). A redirect from Cardinal Wolsey to Thomas Wolsey should be tagged with this rcat, since the person is often referred to as "cardinal" and is the only person named "Wolsey" to have held that title.
- By default, this template places redirects in the Unprintworthy redirects category. To tag and categorize a redirect as printworthy use the unnamed parameter in the following manner:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
</syntaxhighlight>
- or the <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">1=</syntaxhighlight> may be omitted:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
</syntaxhighlight>
- and if applied individually:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
- From name with title: This is a redirect from a person's name (typically surname) preceded (or followed) by a title, such as "Mayor Smith" or "Cardinal Doe" to the name with no title or with the title in parentheses.
- From a printworthy page title: This is a redirect from a title that would be helpful in a printed or CD/DVD version of Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Printability and Version 1.0 Editorial Team for more information.
</syntaxhighlight>
- That will subdue the Unprintworthy redirects category and place the redirect in Category:Printworthy redirects.
