Template:R to plural/doc

Usage

  • Add this rcat to a redirect (not a talk-page redirect) in the following manner:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">

  1. REDIRECT (target article title)

</syntaxhighlight>

Template {{Rcat shell}} is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">

  1. REDIRECT (target article title)

  • To its plural form: This is a redirect from a singular noun to its plural form.
    • Redirects of this sort exist for reader convenience in cases of singular–plural pairs. It is also used for "false singulars", wherein the plural or plural-looking form is better attested in usage, such that the normal "prefer the singular" Wikipedia naming convention is not followed. Examples:
    • Use this rcat to tag qualified mainspace redirects only; if qualified singular forms are found in other namespaces, use {{R from modification}} instead.

</syntaxhighlight>

This is in accord with instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.
  • Use this rcat to tag any mainspace redirect from the singular noun of a plural target. {{R from singular}} redirects here and may also be used.
  • Important note:
    • Redirects of this sort exist for reader convenience in cases of singular–plural pairs or false singulars, wherein the plural or plural-looking form is better attested in usage, such that the normal "prefer the singular" Wikipedia naming convention is not followed. This is not a license to create articles against the English-language Wikipedia's naming conventions, but it is only for those rare cases where the plural is the correct form and the singular is not. Examples:
    • If a singular → plural redirect does not fall within the above description, then consider if Wikipedia:Naming conventions (plurals) would indicate that a page move/rename to the singular title is necessary. The populated category is monitored by contributors who keep track of these to ensure compliance with Wikipedia policies and guidelines.
  • Some singular redirects are printworthy, such as those that are considered as possible article titles over their plural targets. When you add this rcat to a redirect that you decide is printworthy, then use the unnamed parameter to subdue the unprintworthy category in the following manner:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">

</syntaxhighlight>

or the <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">1=</syntaxhighlight> may be omitted:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">

</syntaxhighlight>

and if used individually:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">

  • To its plural form: This is a redirect from a singular noun to its plural form.

Examples:
    • Use this rcat to tag qualified mainspace redirects only; if qualified singular forms are found in other namespaces, use {{R from modification}} instead.
  • With possibilities: This is a redirect from a title that potentially could be expanded into a new article or other type of associated page such as a new template. The topic described by this title may be more detailed than is currently provided on the target page or in a section of that page.
    • When the target page becomes too large, or for any reason a new page would be an improvement, this redirect may be replaced with an article, template or other project page that is carved out of the target page. See also {{R to section}} and use together with this rcat when appropriate.
    • If the topic of the redirect is not susceptible to expansion, then use other rcats such as {{R to section}} or {{R to list entry}} when appropriate.
    • Since a new page may be created, links to this redirect should not be replaced with a direct link to the target page. To make redirects to this page, use {{R avoided double redirect}}.
    • {{R printworthy}} should be used together with this template when applied to a redirect in mainspace.
    • When used on a template redirect, it will automatically populate Category:Template redirects with possibilities.

</syntaxhighlight>

This will suppress the default Category:Unprintworthy redirects, and instead add the redirect to the Printworthy redirects and Redirects with possibilities categories. If there is any possibility that the plural target should be moved to the singular redirect's title per the WP:PLURAL naming guideline, then a requested move may be made to rename the plural form to the singular.
